Understanding Inner Beauty

In the hiring of job candidates, when all are qualified and only one more job requirement is left, the hiring team may choose one who radiates strong outer and inner beauty.

Beauty as related to work is not only about a pretty face.   It has to do with the overall well-being and positivity a worker radiates.   When the employees are under stress at work, it is always preferable to see a peaceful personality over a distressed one.   A peaceful personality attracts a sense of calm that contributes to everyone’s well-being in the office environment.

What makes a person pleasant to look at?   It is said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.   When do we say a person is truly “good-looking” or with “pleasing personality” as related to the workplace?

One more thing before I go on: if pleasing personality means hiring a pretty face without consideration of merit, then I do not advise it as it will not contribute to the company’s good performance.

People do not think in words and phrases.  They think only in pictures and/or images. Words are the raw materials of thought.   When spoken or read, the amazing instrument, the mind, automatically converts words and phrases into mental images.   How you think determines how you act.  And how you act, in turn, determines how others react to you.”

– David J. Schwartz

In your dealings with people, did you ever experience not liking someone even though that person hasn’t done any bad to you? That’s the work of the unconscious mind.   You could have absorbed the bad attributes of that person stored in his unconscious mind.

According to Christopher Bergland’s article in Psychology Today entitled, “New Clues on the Inner Workings of the Unconscious Mind https://www.psychologytoday.com,” the unconscious mind is a separate cognitive system that can learn and remember.   The study done by researchers at the American Society of Anesthesiologists showed those rats’ brains can learn and remember odors they were exposed to while deeply anesthetized. It means that the unconscious mind can remember experiences that occur under anesthesia.

“…Our unconscious mind is the storage of all our memories and past experiences, both those that have been repressed through trauma and those that have simply been consciously forgotten and are no longer important to us.   It is from these memories and experiences that our beliefs, habits, and behaviors are formed… While the conscious mind is the one giving orders for us to do actions, it is the subconscious  mind  and  the  unconscious  mind  that  carry  the  orders.  The unconscious constantly communicates with the conscious mind through the subconscious and is what provides us with the meaning to all our interactions with the world, as filtered through our beliefs and habits.   It communicates through the feelings, emotions, imagination, sensations, and dreams.”

The emotions that reflect on our face are the work of the unconscious mind through the subconscious mind.   The subconscious mind makes it so that it can reach the conscious mind. That is why our inner emotions can be reflected on our face.

So beware of the kind of environment you are in because our mind is capable of absorbing anything from our environment.  Even the thoughts of other people can be absorbed by our mind and stored either in our conscious, subconscious, or unconscious mind.  These thoughts may form images in our mind that are reflected on the outside of our being.

It is only through mindfulness that we can absorb good thoughts to guide our actions. Stored mental images reflect on the outside, and so it answers the belief that inner beauty reflects on the outside.   If you are a person who is surrounded by people doing good things, then it will reflect on your outside being, making you pleasant to look at.

Therefore, people with pleasant looks are those who develop positive mental images coming from their memories whether conscious, subconscious, or unconscious.   If it so happens that people don’t have that, it is best to direct their conscious mind to adapt positive attributes.

Developing this habit will help develop positive mental images that will surely reflect on their outside being. Reading inspirational and self-help books can be a good source of developing positive mental images.  These positive mental images form part of the inner beauty of a person that contributes to nurturing serenity in the office.
